Marlies Hesselman

Lecturer in International Law, Department of Transboundary Legal Studies of the Faculty of Law of the University of Groningen.

Hesselman has over 10 years of teaching experience in the field of interational law and inter alia teaches International Disaster Law in the NOHA Programme’s Humanitarian Action Programme in Groningen. 

Hesselman publishes widely on topics of international and European disaster law, always with a particular focus on human rights law, disaster response and disaster risk reduction. Her articles and chapters have appeared with internationally renowned (peer-reviewed) publications, e.g. with Cambridge University Press, Routledge/Taylor&Francis, Edward Elgar, Brill, the Netherlands Quarterly of Human Rights, Disaster Prevention and Management. She is co-editor of the Yearbook on International Disaster Law (Brill).

She will be contributing to the intensive course with two teaching sessions on the case law of European and other human rights treaty monitoring bodies concerning disaster situations, and on the existence of a human right to humanitarian intervention.
